Our Collective Responsibility

At Bison Hospitality, we’re committed to making a positive impact on campus and the community by focusing on responsible sourcing, reducing food waste, and offering nutritious meals made with responsible practices. From supporting local partners to making thoughtful choices in our dining operations, we’re working every day to build a more sustainable future. And you can be a part of the effort, too!

Feed the Herd Initiative

The Feed the Herd Program is Howard University's student-centered food security initiative designed to combat hunger and support student well-being through a sustainable meal swipe donation system. Developed by the Bison One Card Office in partnership with Bison Hospitality, the Office of Student Affairs, the Howard University Student Association (HUSA), Student Outreach and Engagement, and the Howard University Food Pantry, the program empowers students to support one another by donating unused meal swipes to peers experiencing food insecurity.

Launched as a replacement for the former Swipe Out Hunger program, Feed the Herd leverages the Bison One Card platform to facilitate real-time meal swipe donations and confidential meal requests. The program reflects Howard University's commitment to student success, retention, and equity by ensuring that students facing financial hardship have access to nutritious meals in a dignified and discreet manner.

During the 2025–2026 academic year, the Feed the Herd Program achieved remarkable results:

  • 20,285 meal swipes donated by students
  • 4,969 meal swipes distributed to students in need
  • 3,133 meals utilized by recipients

The program's success demonstrates the strength of Howard University's culture of care and community engagement. By allowing students to both donate and receive meal swipes, Feed the Herd fosters a shared responsibility model that reduces stigma while strengthening campus solidarity.

Marketing and outreach efforts, conducted in partnership with Aramark and the Auxiliary Enterprises Marketing Team, generated significant awareness and engagement. The inaugural promotional campaign first Instagram post received 22,900 views, 455 likes, and 227 shares, helping drive participation and visibility across the university community.

Through strategic collaboration, innovative use of technology, and a commitment to student support, Feed the Herd has established itself as a vital resource that addresses food insecurity while reinforcing Howard University's mission to cultivate a caring, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
